Back in the early 2000s, Nautica entered the Japanese market following massive fanfare back in the US. However, due to fierce competition with other Harajuku subcultures, the brand eventually closed its store in 2008.
Twelve years later, back in 2020, it returned to Japan under an exclusive contract with FREAK'S STORE, which signed Akio Hasegawa, a former fashion director and stylist of the magazine POPEYE, to be its creative director for product design.
